John had always wanted to explore the dusty back streets of cairo, but his friend James had not. James should have stayed at the hotel, but he hadnt wanted to miss out on anything, even if he refused to enjoy it. John did not understand why James had insisted on coming with him to egypt at all since he seemed not to want to see it. they were childhood friends, not lovers, and John preferred doing things alone anyway, but James would not be dissuaded.

i dont believe that any commercial success i might ever be granted
should be an appropriate prompt to fair treatment of me by others
because it would be a very detached signifier at best

and so i apprehend no need to prove myself through outcomes of this nature
or to display my accomplishments and acquisitions through these means,
my personality being mainly as composed and resolved as it will be

at 50 Jane took long service leave and went on a holiday to europe with no fixed itinerary just wandering wherever she pleased considering her past and the peace in her heart. in a small city somewhere she encountered a gypsy in a funfair inciting the laughter of a small crowd by reading fortunes and performing tricks at the door of a caravan. Jane attempted to hover as a spectator on the edge of the group but it was not to be.

“you!” said the gypsy pointing a gnarled old finger “that locket around your neck! give it to me, i will make it vanish.”

there once was a little girl who had no mother but her daddy loved her dearly. he was a nobleman but you would have thought she was a princess by the way he treated her, but she had an inherently good nature and would never be spoiled. however her new stepmother was jealous of his love and when he died her bitterness turned the little girl into a servant for herself and her two daughters from a previous marriage. deprived of any real bed or warm coverings the little girl was made to sleep next to the fireplace and for this the name Cinderella was given to her. the name Cinderella was not actually intended to dehumanise her but only to take away her identity. but the effect of this identity theft was dehumanisation as the thing that really distinguishes each of us as an individual human being is our identity. for this reason perhaps her only friend was a big ugly rat that lived in a hole in the wall and with which she would share any crumbs she could spare.
