Straight On Til Morning

“I have to do this,” said John, with the air of someone who was trying to feel sorry.

“you need to be careful”, said Jane. “i dont think you know what youre getting yourself into. the price might be more than you’re willing to pay. you might be lost forever, you might never come back”. He hadn’t seen her in weeks, but John thought that she looked more beautiful than ever in the fading daylight beaming through the kitchen window. He thought that she would never really know about her beauty.

“I’m sorry,” he said, just as though he was trying even harder, “I love you, but I can’t be a good artist without going there.” Jane looked tired suddenly, and John realised that it was because she was defeated. She flicked a few sorrowful droplets from her gentle, intelligent eyes as she stood up. “goodbye”, she said, and kissed him on the face. “please eat a sandwich John, you look like shit”. She walked out the door and closed it softly behind her, and he knew that was the last time he would ever see her walk out. No one else was left to wonder or worry.

The River

although i respect that i have no idea what its really like to experience incest, i went ahead and composed this depiction of it because i think that refraining from discussing it does nothing to stop it from happening, it just makes it seem like it happens less often than it does, and it turns the whole thing into a taboo of a kind that hurts victims by silencing them.

i also think that in making art, we choose to believe as one of the tasks of what we are doing that it is possible to comprehend and communicate subjectivities other than our own, and that we have to be brave and to try to do that even when its difficult.

if this piece of writing deeply offends anyone who reads it, let me know and i will take it down. thank you for checking out my stuff anyway!

Immortality

As soon as I met him I knew that John was different. He wasn’t like all of the other worms. We became friends straight away and we both found that we wanted to spend all of our time together. We talked about everything. He told me that he was an orphan, and that when he had hatched no one had been there to introduce him to the world. He’d had to find his own way in it, and I thought that was very brave, and I admired him so much. I told him that he was always welcome with my family, and they thought of him as their own anyway. “When are you and that young worm going to settle down and have little grubs of your own?” asked my grandmother. “Oh, Gran,” I said.

after i went away from people i had to ask them to stop calling me. stop calling me stop calling me. eventually they stopped. i had something important to take care of i said and i can only do it alone. then i disconnected the phone and threw it away but they stopped coming to see me too. i dont think they ever came to see me in the first place, i dont think they cared that much. i took out the mailbox at the road, i just pulled it out of the ground and demolished it so it looked nothing like a mailbox just old rubbish and i tossed the rubbish around. they left the mail on the road but it rotted and i closed all of my accounts and no one wanted to write to me anymore anyway. it took years for the grass to grow but not as long as i had thought. it grew over the dirt drive to the house so it looked like it had never been there. from the road it looked like there was no place to live in there. so no one could know that there was someone living there because they couldnt see the house from the road so it just looked like part of the neighbouring properties. the grass grew up around my truck and between the parts. i thought i might need the truck but i knew i wouldnt. i thought itd still work if i needed it but it didnt matter to me if i did or not. i had no reason to need it.

The Delinquent Heart

I showed the doctor out. “I’m sorry,” he had said when he emerged from her room, “There is nothing I can do. But please let me know if I can help in any other way.” There must be something else they can say. It sounds as though they are referring to some piece of cabinetry that can no longer be repaired. I wondered what he had told her.
